Do you remember the "OLD GOATS" of several issues back?? The boys who after graduation in 1944 went to the DURYEA Three Lakes house and celebrated? Then did a "return" trip in 1999? By then they had shrunk by a few and decided it was a good enuff time to keep doing it every now and then.
Twelve guys got together in '99. St.Clair and Rohm had died even at that early age, and Calkins and Sox were not able to make it. This year, 2007, JOE WAGNER invited all of them to his home on Hawaii for a 63rd Glenbard reunion, and 80th birthdays all around. OMG!!! 5 made it: John Glathe, Bob Hilb, Jim Love, Al Osterling, and Wagner! Here's Jim' report on the gathering:
REUNIONS GETTING SMALLER -- By Jim Love, Old Goat, Class of 1944
63 YEARS AGO, sixteen of Glenbard's brand new alumni (guys) headed to Three Lakes, Wisconsin for a brief R&R from their 4 years of scholastic(?) rigors before entering the real world. Some went by train, some by bicycle, and some by thumb. It was a time to reflect on the good old high school days, and get ready for what was ahead.
What transpired during that week at Three Lakes has, mercifully, been lost in history. June 6th was "breaking camp" day, and they awoke to the radio reporting on the invasion of the coasts of Normandy. D-E Day was there. Their "real world" had arrived. In the months ahead, they went their separate ways - service, college, jobs and eventually families and careers.
As the years sped by, there were Class of '44 reunions, where classmates got together and spun tales which were grander each reunion. Finally in 1999 Phil and Les organized a 55th for the Three Lakes crowd, since no 55th was planned for the full class. Twelve of the 16 who were at the '44 gathering at Three Lakes were able to attend. More stories lost to history. Those that remain really have been "spun."
In the spring of this year Joe Wagner offered to host the 63rd on the Big Island of Hawaii for the surviving ten members of the group. Five were able to attend: John Glathe, Bob Hilb, Jim Love, Al Osterling and the Host, (breakfast Chef Supreme), Joe Wagner. The week was short, but packed with lots of sight-seeing, reminiscing, and enjoying a good time together. On May 26th (does that date ring a bell?) it was back to the Mainland, and reality.
