IT SEEMS TO ME . . . (The Editor's Commentary)

Friday, May 26, 2006 ! 62 years ago on this date, also a Friday, The Class of 1944 graduated from Glenbard and walked out into the world, and into War. And here we are again.

Fortunately, all our service classmates came back to us, except for FRANK MOULTON in that War...but we have lost many others in the past 62 years. I'm not sure, but I think we celebrated Memorial Day on May 31st in those times...we hadn't yet adjusted our lives and calendars so that we would always have a 3-day weekend!

AND SO, it seems to me, this is a fine day to begin writing this Class of 1944 Newsletter and to dedicate this FIRST YEARLY ISSUE to the Classmates who are not here to celebrate with us, not just Veterans, but ALL our missing friends.

So, tip a glass when you read this, on whatever weekend it is, in remembrance of the "Good Old Days", our Class, our next Reunion, and all the young men who are out there this year in danger...while you're at it...THINK PEACE!     PHL

From the preceding 'commentary' you may have guessed that the Newsletter will hereafter be published once a year...and probably spring/summer...OR if there is some especially important announcement before the summer issue, we will try to write, at least, an update. Chuck would certainly have it on the web site, so those of you computer friendly alumni be sure to check every week or so...OK? The other reason for an extra mailing would be when we are overwhelmed by an exciting event of some kind that would be of interest to all.

AND, also...this will be the last Letter to be snail-mailed to you who own computers and are internet savvy. IF, however, you really need a "hard copy" for posterity or some other reason, let me know, and you will receive one. We are just cutting costs and effort where we can.

That said, the Editor is always open to suggestions, news, complaints, and pictures for publication.   Colored pages, however, are a buck a piece in print, and need to be limited for hard copy receivers. So, try to send pictures that will print decently in B & W.

We are NOT broke, but since our Laughlin get together, we are poorer than last issue...(see money report) and since NEWS has been in short supply, it seems to be prudent to conserve a little on the chit chat issues. Let me know objections, and solutions!

We sure had a great time in Laughlin, and were the second most attendees from a single Class   We had 20 because we lost AL and Sally BIRKELBACH and MAX and BETTY GRIMSHAW at the last minute. The final day the talk was of the NEXT time, so we are positive there will be a next time. 2009 in Laughlin for the whole school again, and, maybe, somewhere else for a separate '44 Meet, sooner than later. Just dreaming, but who knows??

Meanwhile, read on, and have a fun summer doing exactly what you love doing. There is a book report included in this issue, so get to the Library, or Borders to find one of these, tell us your reviews. Also about your vacations & love affairs !
