WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN READING?

This seemed to be a "book" summer for me, and I found some real 'goodies', I think. So the question went out to the Grads on line, and here are their recommendations;

Anne Wallerius Hoy -- FOREVER, by Pete Hammill; an Irish saga from 300 years ago. An historical portrayal of New York, and all of it's periods.

Albie Birkelbach -- THE BATTLE FOR GOD by Karen Armstrong - the rise of radicalism in Islam, Judaism and Christianity; why radical religious groups developed, and why we are in the mess we are in now. Also THE SOUTH BEACH DIET for you know what. Commendable, but we caved in to our craving for carbs. Also THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY by Erik Larson: very entertaining, and great info on Chicago families and the landmarks we grew up with. One last suggestion: I have grown fond of the book reviews on C-Span on the weekends. Happy Reading to All.

Les Duryea -- I enjoyed several books: STATECRAFT by Margaret Thatcher, and Winchester's THE MAP THAT CHANGED THE WORLD. Also: THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN by Theodaore Rex., and, of course, THE DA VINCI CODE -- Number 1 on the NY Times list. A mystery.

Marge (Holtorf) Cosgrove -- THE HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG - by Andre Dubus III (her book club is starting this) Also THE GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING - by Tracy Cavelier.

And I wrote to Marge about my favorite of the summer - THE GIRL IN HYACINTH BLUE - by Susan Vreeland. She had also read it and told me about the "Pearl" book - they are similar but I dearly loved the Hyacinth story (they are both about a Vermeer painting.) It is a 'little' book, and I read it in one sitting. But CHARMING. I also read Hillary's book (GOOD), KATE REMEMBERED and LINDBERGH both by Scot Berg and BOTH of Michael Moore's books -- as you might have guessed!   How about you?

Words from MAX GRIMSHAW:

"In response to Ye Olde Ed's plea for news I thought my reply had better be timely...

Betty and I celebrated our 50th twice in 2003. Once here in Oregon, and again in Illinois with OUR 4 children, their 15 kids, and many long time friends. The Class of '44 was represented by HAROLD AND MARGE METZNER.

Betty and I have always enjoyed travel by car, so we bought a van conversion for the trip. We took our time and stopped along the way, which made it comfortable for my 98 year old Mother to come along!
(Ed. note: See there's HOPE for all of us!)

While in Illinois, I took our 4 plus some of the 'grands' on a tour of GE to show them where I had lived and gone to school. Hardly anything looks the same. The house at 209 Bryant isn't there any more, and Bryant is not only paved but filled with houses on both sides. Glenbard is still familiar and impressive looking, but late in June -- during renovation -- not very presentable. A great school still. Weren't we fortunate??
(Ed. Note: Max, some of us were there in September '02, and feel the same!!! Wish you had joined the last reunion...the next one, for sure!)
Betty and I would always welcome any of you to Beautiful Central Oregon!"
