ALICE HOYE ROISE - sent a nice reply to a phone call I made to her re: PHYLLIS WALLACE We haven't heard from Phyl at all, and I keep trying to find her anyway. Come to find out she lives, now, in South Carolina, and so does Alice, but they are not close enough to see each other.
ALICE holds out for another reunion so she and Paul may yet attend!! For now they are busy with lots of church activities. Her brother (class of 1937) passed away in March. He lived in Boulder City, Nevada, and had she known how ill he was, they would probably have made the Feb. trip! We are sorry on both accounts, ALICE!

THEN - a few days later, came a letter from Karen Ellis, PHYLLIS WALLACE Kamp's daughter, in response to a 'forwarded' card that I sent to that address. Here's part . . .

    "Patsy:
My mother and father, Phyllis and Louis Kamps have permanently moved in with #1 Daughter (Karen) in Simpsonville, SC. The move occurred in November of 2001. They occupy the top floor of our house having their own bedroom, bath and large sitting room. Our house is on 13 acres. Many neighbors have animals enjoyed by our parents on daily walks. My sister Linda lives outside of Atlanta, which is 3 short hours away . . . it's nice having all of us so close . . .
Sincerely, Karen (Kamps) Ellis 210 Bruce Meadow Road Simpsonville, SC 29681"

(I have written to Phyl (through Karen) since receiving the letter, and I bet she would like to hear from any of you who are so inclined. Mystery solved. The Editor)

LIFE IS NOT MEASURED BY THE NUMBER OF BREATHS WE TAKE, BUT BY THE MOMENTS THAT TAKE OUR BREATH AWAY!

A PRAYER FOR THE WORLD
Let the rain come and wash away the ancient grudges, the bitter hatreds held and nurtured over generations.
Let the rain wash away the memory of the hurt, the neglect.
Then let the sun come out and fill the sky with rainbows. Let the warmth of the sun heal us wherever we are broken. Let it burn away the fog so that we can see each other clearly.
So that we can see beyond labels, beyond accents, gender or color. Let the warmth and brightness of the sun melt our selfishness, so that we can share the joys and feel the sorrows of our neighbors.
And let the light of the sun be so strong that we will see all people as our neighbors. Let the earth nourished by rain bring forth flowers to surround us with beauty. And let the mountains teach our hearts to reach upward to heaven.
Amen.   RABBI HAROLD S. KUSHNER

GREETINGS FROM SWEDEN!
Remembering that our classmate, PEGGY (Pearson) SODERSTROM sent us a lovely donation of 'kroner' (to Phil, actually, to be forwarded), PHIL sent me the note she wrote:

    "Dear Phil,
First of all, I want to thank you for sending me the list of addresses of our classmates of 1944 and also the Fall newsletter. You asked me how I met my husband. I will try to make a long story short.
I had made up my mind April 1953 to take a leave of absence from my work in Chicago and take a trip to Sweden to visit my relatives. I booked passage with the Swedish American Line on the ship Gripsholm that left from New York to Gothenberg, a nine day trip.
When I arrived at my aunt and uncle's home in Olofstrom they all were glad to see me. We had not seen each other since 1947. A few days after my arrival to Olofstrom, I was busy typing a letter to my parents telling them that the trip went well and I am all right.
My aunt came into the room with a stranger and introduced us. Karl Soderstrom had an errand to talk to my uncle. My aunt told me that Karl was also a personal friend to them. He came to Olofstrom 1951 after he took his engineer exam in Stockholm. He was an engineer for the community.
A few days later he rang to me and asked if I would like to have dinner with him, and one date led to another. We were engaged Christmas eve 1953. We were married in 1954 and moved to our new home. My husband and I have one daughter and two granddaughters.
We lived in Olofstrom for 10 years, and then moved to Jamjo 1964 into another new home. I am living alone in our home as my husband passed away October 2001. I will have to live on my memory.
I want to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas (Ed. note: 2001) (God Jul) and (och) Happy New Year (Gott Nytt Ar)
    Truly yours,
                    Peggy
PS: We were in Spain 1968. We took our car on this trip. We were in Madrid, Sevilla, Malaga, Valencia and Barcelona. It was a beautiful drive along this coast. The water was a clear color of blue.
We were in Russia 1969. We went by bus, and our driver was from Olofstrom."
A truly lovely story, Peggy. We are sorry for the loss of Karl. Thank you again for the contribution to the Newsletter. Please keep in touch with us once in awhile and let us know how you are faring.   The Editor
