PAT BAER BITTERMANN sent me a note after we were all home from Glen Ellyn. She says they really enjoyed the Reunion, and hopes we have a 60th!!! They will not be NOT be able to make Laughlin though. She sent me this story of their trip to England last summer:

"My brother, Carl Owen Baer, Glenbard class of '39, was the pilot of a B-17 Bomber during WWII. He was shot down after a raid on Brunswick, Germany, Jan. 30, 1944. He went down in the North Sea and didn't survive. It has been my consuming desire to visit Ridgewell Air Base in England where he was stationed. August of this year that was fulfilled. Larry and I went with a small tour group (5 men had been based there) and spent a day at Ridgewell. There is a beautiful memorial and a small museum in one of the few remaining 'quansets' that served as a hospital. Several people were there to welcome us, and expressed gratitude for America 'coming to their rescue"! The base has been returned to farmland now. We also toured Dover (the White Cliffs! Going through the secret war tunnels. Fascinating! Then London. A memorable trip".

MARGE HOLTORF COSGROVE says she started missing everyone as soon as she drove away from Glen Ellyn...(me too, Marge! It seems SO short, and we never really get to say it all!) She and Charles celebrated their 50th anniversary with a trip to Colorado (where they met and married) this year, but the real celebration will be when all 5 of their offspring come home for Christmas...including the son who lives in Japan! MERRY, MERRY!

AL AND CECE OSTERLING have returned to Desert Hot Springs for some of the winter, anyway. They hung around after the reunion visiting and playing with newlyweds, John and Carol Glathe. They went to the Garfield Park Conservatory Sunday afternoon, and then met them at one of the outstanding "Jazz Joints" to hear a favorite musician and have Pizza at Pizzeria UNO! Fun!

HAROLD METZNER who lives with his sweet, patient wife in Wisconsin seemed to have a good time at the Reunion. He is having some trouble with his eyesight, so communicates by telephone more than in print!! He, howsomever, convinced wife Marge, or someone, to type a story for this issue...he had told it to me on the phone, and I was going to try to be specific...but no need. Here are his words:

ONCE IN A LIFETIME

My wife, Marge and I were married June 17, 1950. Six children (5 boys - 1 girl), and 50 years later, we celebrated our anniversary. All of our children, 14 grand children and many friends helped us celebrate. We had a "no gifts" request. Our children, however, didn't listen, any more than they did when they were smaller! We were presented with an "all expenses paid" trip to ALASKA. Well, we knew we had good kids. Marge raised them while I was busy raising my business. Luckily, both turned out good.

What a surprise! A trip to Alaska! This was, however, only one way?? I think they were trying to tell us something...   Just kidding , of course. They even gave us cash for tips, taxi and hotel. Pretty nice, huh? We still weren't through with surprises, however. On the plane trip from Minneapolis to Vancouver, the public address system turned on and a voice announced that Harold and Marge Metzner sitting in 9A and B were celebrating their 50th anniversary: "Please give them a warm hand"! the voice continued and said "This is their son Jim" (a pilot!) and then he came out - kissed his Mother and hugged his Dad. Well, I guess you know it was Kleenex time!

What a day..."Once in a lifetime".

A SWELL STORY, INDEED!   Thanks Harold

Some of the grads we really thought would attend our 58th in Glen Ellyn didn't show...Jennie Swallen, Ginny Scholl and Daryl James all canceled their reservations late in the game! Dave and Ann Wallerius Hoy were in Texas at an old Navy thing. The Birkelbachs never did make a res., but we missed them...as well as The Revs. Roger and Shirley Rose! Bette Stitt (Kalina), Marie Hulcranz, Joyce Cochran, Eunice 'Fiddy' Fiala, Priscilla Hopping, Gene Maxwell, Alice Hoye (I was SURE she'd come!), "Itch" Malm, Don Sage, and my personal MISS...PHYLLIS WALLACE...darn you, Phyl! You're a LOCAL. We'd sure like to see y'all in LAUGHLIN! How about it?? And CALKINS! Gee! We have coaxed the Durnals, finally...maybe next time you guys!!!

So...   here's the skinny on the next trip to Laughlin, Nevada for the ALL GLENBARD Reunion on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 11 and 12, 2003. Charlie Rosenthal is the actual chairman of the event, but the Phillips (Cal and Sue) are doing some of the planning. I am told that everyone who attended the 2000 gig has received a "packet", but I am not sure they could afford to send the info to everyone in every class. You can get the packet by contacting the Phillips: cphill80@cybertrails.com.

If you were NOT at the last Laughlin event, you should try to make it this time. Everyone who DID attend enjoyed it immensely. We had our own Class of 1944 Valentine Party that year, but there is no plan I am aware of to do that again...   BUT, the plan is to have a "post reunion breakfast" on Thursday morning before everyone leaves for home. It will be an extra $11.50 per person, and EARLY...so, if you can get yourself together by 8 a.m. for that, it will probably be fun! (I'm not human at that hour!)

The Treasurer's Report

After the Reunion we couldn't seem to get in touch with our Treasurer, and we began to suspect that he had absconded with the Class Funds (kidding, of course). Then we learned that Jim and Fran Love were in Greece on a Tauk Tour. So, we were relived when on HALLOWEEN we got an E-Mail from the travelers, with this Money Report from the Treasurer:

This seems like the end of another issue!! WOW! We never really get all the items in the same one...but that is a good thing...if the Spring issue is short on news, there will be some left-over stuff.

No one has sent me any "Angel" news, and I'm glad of that. If we all live a little longer, our chances get better, 'they' tell me! I truly hope that as many as possible will go to Laughlin in February...every chance we have to get together is a treasure!

There are a few grads who have been in for 'repairs', and we need to keep them in our thoughts: Al Osterling, Betty Staley Carlin, Mrs. Phil Woodworth (Shirley), Ed Kett, and our webmaster, Chuck Staufenberg.
