IT SEEMS TO ME . . . (The Editor's Commentary)
That this is NOT the time to be talking WAR! You can express YOUR thoughts to
the President, as I did, this way:
Phone the White House at 202-456-1111 between 9-5 EST, Mon.-Fri. A machine
will detain you for a moment ("Please hold; your call is very important to the President") and then a very pleasant, real-life operator will thank you for saying
"I oppose" (or "I approve of" - hopefully, none of you will say this) the proposed war on Iraq. They ask you the state you are from (like they don't have caller ID!), and that's it.
It took me less than 2 minutes. A few tries with re-dial to get past the busy signal,
then just a short wait to get an operator. It is very easy and very important to take
this painless step to voice your opinion on a matter that can affect us all.

Post 58th Reunion!
It was MARVELOUS, as always...what could be better than a bunch of old 'Jocks' and 'Beauty Queens' and 'plain Janes' (like me) and patient spouses, getting together to reminisce, and laugh and cry (a little) toss down a few and put away some wonderful food?? Ben and I had a fine time, indeed, and although we missed several classmates who canceled at almost the last minute, I was delighted to see the ones who showed, and so was everyone else.
We arrived on Thursday evening (having been held up in Salt Lake for two hours) and were happy to see several friends right away...all of whom then drove down the street (North Avenue) for some late dinner at Kys :The Woodworths (Phil and Shirley), The Osterlings (Al and Cece), Les Duryea (YES, he really came!), and, I think, Jim and Frannie Love..O JOY!...(Nancy MacGonagle More was at the Motel, but didn't come to dinner).
It had drizzled that day, and we were just hoping that our "First Sox Howell Memorial Golf Tourney" would safely be held on Friday morning...of course, we woke up to RAIN!...not just drizzle, so with apologies to Sox, we canceled our tee time. Nancy (who was in charge of prizes and presents had made and given each player a bag with treats, balls, tees and a "Sock" shaped note with:
"SOX" HOWELL
Memorial Golf, Sept. 20, 2002
Glenbard Class of '44
written on the front!! We ate the treats, and I still have my bag with the balls and tees, so does Ben. Too bad. (Actually, I was sort of happy I didn't have to get out there and prove what a crummy golfer I am!)
Friday evening, Bob and Jane Hilb had invited all from 'out of town' and his Committee for cocktails at their home on Montclair Avenue in Glen Ellyn. How lovely it was...and a chance to really chat one-on-one with everyone. Pat and John Mitchell's daughter, Laurie Gornik catered the party (it is her business and she does a wonderful job!) and we had more than enough cocktail fare to cover the dinner hour! ( and I bet Hilbs had some breakfast).
Many cameras flashed and many hugs and smiles reigned the while! The invitation said 6 to 8, but I am sure we stayed much later than 8...there are some pictures included in the
'montage' coming up. Chuck Staufenberg's son BRUCE accompanied his dad as 'sherpa' and driver since Chuck had his shoulder-joint-replaced arm in a sling. We all gasped at the sight of Bruce as he is a carbon copy of his dad (a couple of years ago!), and we were sure we were seeing things.
Saturday day, people sort of went their own way. Several 'Old Football Players ' went to see the Glenbard game, which Glenbard lost again, and blamed it all on Phil Woodworth who seems to always jinx the team. Some of us, driven by Cece Osterling, went to a darling shopping area in Geneva, and had lunch and spent some money...Marge Holtorf Cosgrove, Fran Proctor Love, Shirley Woodworth, Nancy Mac-More, and I...more JOY.
Some time in there, Friday or Saturday day, we also visited the GE Historical Society in Stacey's Tavern, and bought some things of remembrance...I finally got a copy of the big book, GLEN ELLYN, A VILLAGE REMEMBERED, by Helen Ward and Robert Chambers, that I had been wanting since the 50th! The Historical Society is the sole source for the book now, I think. As it should be. Real nostalgia, and full of places you know and love!
Saturday night at Glen Oak was wonderful, but not as cozy as it had been at Hilbs. There were more classmates who had arrived on Saturday, and some who were "locals" still, who were not at the motel, (which, by the way, was 'clean', and that's about all you could say for it!)
We put out on a table the 'copied' Glen Bards (the originals of which belong to Al Osterling, are in my care, and are very fragile), and some pictures sent to me by Chuck Schoen, of THE FRANK LEWIS MOULTON American Veterans AMVETS Post 66, Palm Springs, Ca. We wrote about this in a previous Newsletter, and some exerpts from Chuck's report are available here. The Post is extremely proud of our Frank! Also on display were pictures belonging to other grads, and memorabilia galore...
A great dinner of beef or salmon, a little muted music (my fault, I forgot) and much good conversation (more snapshots) and John Mitchell lined us up (grads only...or almost grads) for a GROUP PICTURE. In here, but I am having trouble ID-ing everyone!
AND then, "Sunday In The Park" for brunch, also catered by Laurie Gornik, was divine! No tears, as at the 50th, but many hugs and more pictures and GOOD FOOD! (And Al Osterling got to lead us all in the Fight Song! show-off that he is!) Not everyone came for brunch; Tom Jensen had to make an early plane, and then a couple of people came ONLY to the brunch... and we went our separate ways again...back to the Ramada, to O'Hare to get home, or to another destination.
I think the consensus was that this was probably our LAST HURRAH in Glen Ellyn...HOW DO YOU FEEL?? We'd like to hear your thoughts.

As we closed up shop on Saturday evening, your Newsletter Staff sent around some sheets of paper for - what else? - NEWS! Our sheets said: "Please tell us something about you or your family for our next Newsletter. Those who didn't make the Reunion would like to hear about YOU." Here are the 'somethings' we got:
* * * * * * *
MARLYN MEYER:
It was a great reunion & we missed you! We're still living in Lombard surrounded by our 3 children and 4 granddaughters. We spend 2 weeks a month at our summer place in Door Co., Wis.
NANCY FREDERICKSEN NORTH:
We left Illinois in Feb. 1958 for California. We have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. I lost my husband June 1999, after 49 years. We attend the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Ca. where I am an Elder. We usher for the 'Glory' programs at Christmas and Easter. I like living in Anaheim, but will always miss Glen Ellyn.
BOB DURNAL:
After having been"lost" to the GBHS group for so long (I was re-discovered just before the 1st Newsletter), I was certainly pleased to meet so many of the '44 class. Are any others interested in number theory? Would like to exchange information.E-Mail:
afn21533@afn.org
DR.BOB MCCRAY (Who is doing remarkably well with his Parkinson's damned problem...Bless him):
Completely retired. Follow the Glen Ellyn Clinic; taught History of Medicine at C.D.
LORRAINE FASSE ECKWALL:
We've been fortunate to be able to enjoy our retirement. We spend our winters in Fla. We love to play golf, go biking, etc. Our favorite thing is cruising. We've been on 39 and have our 40th booked for December 2002.. We took a 59 day cruise around South America, and a 34 day Mediterranean cruise. Another favorite was Hawaii, and going through the Panama Canal.
The 58th Reunion was very, very nice. Met a lot of classmates. Best wishes to all.
LUCILLE SIEMS MIKES:
Must tell of my exciting life since our 50th reunion. At that time, I was in a refresher course at Elgin Community College. This accomplished, I became part of Medical Ministry Int'l. participating in 2 week projects in Dominican Republic, Ghana, Brazil, Ecuador, Uzbekistan, China and Mongolia. Have also had 3 trips to Mexico working in an orphanage, building houses and my husband winning a church in Tecacate. To God be the Glory! Thanks to the Committee for a great reunion evening.
JANET GOLDBACH ROSENWINKEL:
Ralph and I attended Glenbard's 58th Reunion - met a lot of the old classmates we haven't seen for many years. Such a nice time and memories.
HAROLD THORSELL:
A Story of Mr. Biester...
As a student who never applied himself in High School, had a bad start, and was always behind on credits, or incomplete. When it became time to graduate, I told Mr.Biester I had enough credits to graduate. He checked my credits, and agreed. By that time everybody had their gowns, so he apologized to me and bought my gown and invitations. What a wonderful man and principal!!
JOHN GLATHE (and Bride: Carol Seeds Glathe):
Carol and I surprised our family and friends by getting married on July 29, 2002. I confess to feeling a little self-conscious being a 75yr. old "newly wed" (Ed. comment: MUCH better than "nearly dead", John!) I continue to work 1 day/week, do my docenting at Stanford's Biological Preserve, travel, ski, play with my computer, and argue politics with my brother, (who is to the Right of Atilla the Hun). Many thanks to the editors and organizers of the Reunion. Lets all get together in LAUGHLIN!!
(AGREED! more of that follows)
PAT BEEZLEY MITCHELL:
We sure had fun at our reunion - our daughter Laurie had fun too! She catered our brunch and did a wonderful job. Thanks to Bob Hilb for all the organizing!!
JOHN (OLE MITCH) MITCHELL:
Bob and Jane Hilb - EXCELLENT JOB (& loved doing it!) So-o-o many folks from all over the
country!! We are old stick-in-the-muds from right here.
JOE WAGNER:
Good Year!! I was inducted into the Colorado Business Hall of Fame early in the year. They must have been running out of prospects! Our 5 children and 4 1/2 grandchildren all live nearby, which is good. Youngest daughter, Betsy, is almost 21 & is a junior at Syracuse Univ. Business is good. We just acquired the Caterpillar dealer in New Mexico, so we now have Colo., N. Mex., Mongolia, & part of S.E. Siberia with approx. 1400 employees. I'm having loads of fun, so why retire?
JANE KEMPER JANKE:
In May I went on a cruise to Alaska with my son, David, who is a geologist.
In July, I spent 3+ weeks in Mexico with two of my daughters who were in a Spanish immersion program. I'm one of the daily chairmen at the hospital, and I play bridge twice a week! Even
though I'm half way on the way to Florida, I haven't had visitors. Also, I have visited Washington D.C.with my grandson.
TOM JENSEN:
January 2003, am going on a trip to Antarctica. Fly to Argentina, then take a ship to Antarctica .(please check spelling) (Ed. Note: My 'spell check' did it, Tom!) It takes 16 days for the trip. Remember, this is summer in the Southern Hemisphere.
DR. DAN FRANK:
I'm still working part time and still like my work. However, I'm getting close to retiring so I can get more exercise in my yard. My kids are spread across the country, so a couple of them are not around my house very often. My health remains pretty good, but meds I take for high blood pressure have horrendous side effects, & I make the best. The
reunion is great. I hope we can have another .!!
* * * * * * *
That's all we could pry out of the old grads !! and several didn't even write ANYthing...including the Committee, and the Staff...but it was certainly worth the fare to Chicago, and the pain of travel...at least to me! I could do it all again SOON! ( maybe before the snow falls though)
We are certainly aging, and I have been to two funerals since returning home! Old age is NOT for sissies, for sure! I think our whole Class looks MARvelous, though...honest, we do.
DO YOU EVER FEEL LIKE THIS ??
