IT SEEMS TO ME . . . (The Editor's Commentary)
That our priorities have changed, and not for the better, since September 2001. (I will NOT call it 9/11). The citizenry and elected officials seem to be focused on an undeclared war, taking sides with mid-eastern countries (Arab or Israeli), arguing amongst ourselves, spreading threats of terrorism, scaring old ladies and little children and warning of some dire disaster. I, for one, am tired of the rhetoric of horror and daily spread of fear. It used to be the Soviets, or maybe the Chinese. Things change . We're not so frightened of the Chinese, and we're buddies with the Russians. That seems good. But now we don't have enough to fear. Do we HAVE to be afraid of something? Depends on whom you talk to...I can't creep around looking for terrorists all day...I have too much to be happy about. Maybe I'm naive, but I have never felt nervous about my country's image until now. I worry about "respect" more than terror.
There was a story on the news recently about some Ugandan conjoined twins. They had no chance of survival in Uganda...The doctors there knew not how to separate them. They and their parents were brought here at no cost to them, and the twins were separated and saved. Of course, I wept. Gandhi said "Be the change you want to see in the world". It seems to me, that's the sort of change that makes us proud.   See it?

That said, let's get on with the News! And it has come in from far and wide.
The main item is, of course, the GRAND REUNION OF 2002 in September. As of this writing, our capable, busy, handsome Treasurer tells us we have upwards of 45 attendees paid up and looking forward to the weekend! We promised the "Club" we'd have a minimum of 50...THAT MEANS, if you haven't yet made a reservation, and sent the money to Jim Love, DO IT NOW! It's hard for me to believe that you don't WANT to be there! Especially you grads who live within driving distance!!!! Shall I start naming names???? C'mon group! LETS HAVE A BIG turnout !
There is talk of a golf game on Friday and/or Saturday morning. If that sounds good to you, TELL the Committee! There is talk of a cocktail get-together on Friday night, hopefully at the Ramada...if THAT sounds good to you, TELL the Committee! If NOT...tell the Committee. THIS IS THE CLASS OF 1944...ALL OF US...so let your ideas be known. How can they plan anything without YOU???
COME!! PLAN WITH US !!

Here is a picture of CELEBRATION, stolen from a Christmas card sent to the Osterlings by
THIS FAMILY OF MCCRAYS

What a handsome family!
(all 250 of them!)

Now travel back in time a few decades, and tell us who all these Lovelies are. Some of our class, some earlier (but not much). Obviously Queens of Something! I see Marie Hullcranz; Bette Stitt; Thelma Stephens; Ginny Scholl, and other faces I know, but can't name! Aren't they the beauties??

Health Tip: WATER

*     *     *     *     *     *     *

1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated

2. In 37% of Americans the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

3. Even mild dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of dieters studied.

5. Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. 8 to 10 glasses of water a day can significantly ease back and joint pain.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or printed page. (NOW I know what's wrong!!!)

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water a day decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, and can slash the risk of breast cancer by 70%!!!

PAY ATTENTION, FRIENDS! It's worth a try! And it's inexpensive.

If we are really, really good we might have the same future as the ladies on the right: Ann Prichard, Mildred Mulligan, and Helen Clippinger!   But don't count on it!
