TRAVELERS!
We all know these Love Birds (and here with birds). Frannie and Jim had a lovely trip to Hawaii, and sent us this photo, complete with leis and parrots of all sizes! They have even been to Germany since this trip! Just one honeymoon after another, right???

NEWS OF EVERYONE

BOB HILB is working like crazy on plans for the REUNION of 2002!! This is "mention: #1" ; We will mention the REUNION many more times to drill it into your heads!!! September 22, 2002!! Mark your new calendars NOW.

ROSEMARIE MAREK VAUGHN keeps in touch wondering how you all are doing, and who we have seen. She's doing well, although has a couple of aches and pains like the rest of us!   (ME!)

BILL PATRICK sent me a book titled : All the Angels in the Bible, by Herbert Lockyear. It is sub-titled: A complete Exploration of the Nature and Ministry of Angels. Bill was confused by our reference to "angels" when we lose a grad. I'm a great believer in Angels, Bill. I have my own "bevy" with whom I chat often!!!

PAT BAER BITTERMANN, bless her, sent me the obituary for Russ, which only said "following a short Illness", so that's all we know, so far.
She also has been in touch with Mrs. Mumley, (Kietz' daughter) and found that his 101st birthday is December 12th. Pat hopes as many as possible of us will send him a card:
RENO KIETZMAN, c/o Sally Mumley, 510 Washington Avenue, Wilmette, IL 60091
GOOD IDEA GANG!

CARL ROSENHAGEN - And the FISH!!
Not just fish, though. . . Carl loves to GOLF, too. Can't think of any more fun than THAT!
Thanks CARL!!

PHIL WOODWORTH and best pal Shirley, have been to China in the meanwhile, in Yueyang on the Yangste, to visit the town of one of their Chinese granddaughter's birth. They have TWO of those, by Golly!

THE AL OSTERLINGS of "Travel the World in Your Magic 5th Wheel" fame, sent a note post - New York Visit:
"Just got back from 3 weeks in the village NYC ,visiting son and family, and are still getting over the shock of September 11! We were only 2 miles away. Suffered no harm or personal losses, but experience is, to say the least, depressing. On the other hand, inspirational the way New Yorkers face up!
We got to reflecting that we've been on site for the two biggest news events of the past 12 months: Florida for the Presidential election and now NYC."
They are in West Virginia, working their way back to Illinois, and then to CA!
Hot Dog! See you soon, Al and Cece!!

Dave and Anne Hoy are settled happily in their Camden Castle, with trips west probably more than they'd like!? We heard from them while they were in San Diego, CA attending a reunion of WWII ship-mates from the USS Altamaha (CVE-18). . . then back to Tucson to try and sell the old homestead before returning to Maine. We couldn't lure them up to Balboa Island for a peanut butter sandwich, though.

Al and Sally Birkelbach were also here in Orange County during the summer, but never made the Island, either. They have more than one kid in Irvine, I think, and may be back in October. . . would dearly love to get a photo of those two for this issue!!! We'll see. They have one daughter in Manhattan, and another working adjacent to the Pentagon. Al is also missing his Broker who worked for Morgan Stanley. Both girls are okay, but shaken! Too close.

THE REV. ROGER ROSE left for Taichung, Taiwan in late August for four months of language study, and serving as Chaplain to the English language congregation at St. James, Taichung.
The language study will be a help for Rog, as he works in the all Chinese parish of St. Gabriels in Monterey Park, CA.
We expect a detailed report when you return, Rog.

Ed Kett wrote in July that he had just had a ten day stay in Central Dupage Hospital recovering from the removal of a cancerous lung tumor. He says the operation was a success, and he is looking forward to our next REUNION in September 2002, after a complete recovery.
Good for you, ED. . . we'll see you there!

GUNTHER'S Daughter, Linda Bucaro, has informed us that Gunny was returned to the hospital sometime in August, so, at the moment we have no phone number for him. . . as soon as we know it, we will have Chuck put it on the Web Update page.
We're thinking of you GUN!!!
I WISH !

HERE'S A GROUP WE HAVE NOT HEARD FROM BEFORE. . . PAT DOYLE WASMOND sent us a great photograph of her Family, "The Doyle Clan" on their recent vacation. There are 18 of them ranging in age from 57 to 80, and all in pretty good health. Five of the nine Doyles have been married 50 years or more. Four of them have cottages near Madison, Wis., so they see a lot of the children and grandkids. Between them they have 44 children and 110 (!) grandchildren. Thirteen of the original 18 graduated from GLENBARD.

This is truly an EVER LOYAL CLAN!   Thanks, Pat.

NOW. . . take a clue from the DOYLE family and prepare for the GREAT GLENBARD CLASS OF 1944 REUNION in September 2002!! Strangely, we don't seem to get the enthusiasm that I expect from this FABULOUS Class! This Editor is enthused, the Webmaster is enthused, the Publisher is enthused, I know the Treasurer is enthused, and SOME who have sent notes are enthused. . . HOW ABOUT YOU? WE WILL NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU pro or con, SOON. A year sounds like a long time, but it is NOT, and there is much planning to do.
BOB HILB has raised his hand, has a date, September 22nd, and we have committed 50 to 75 people to Glen Oak CC. Send me a postcard (21¢), or an E-mail, or a letter (34¢) with your thoughts. . . or send them to Hilb, but PLEASE don't put it off. Time is short, we are all three quarters of a century old. . . and, I (not even a true grad, except in heart) need to do this once more, at least.   COMMUNICATE!

111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321!!   I knew that!

$$$$$$$?? Yes, we do:
TREASURER, SOX HOWELL (did you know he had all A's at Glenbard except for a B in English in his sophomore year???) says we have a balance of $658.55

Last issue we told you there was $768.81. We received donations of $100 from Hoys and Lucille Beckman, and Phil's cost of printing the Spring Issue was $210.26
So: 768.81 + 100.00 - 210.26 = $658.55.

WE SURE APPRECIATE EVERY BUCK THAT ARRIVES INTO THE TREASURY!!
There is about enough for 3 more issues of the Newsletter, BUT we have the "Last Hurrah" REUNION (YES WE DO) in September of 2002, and we would be better off if we had a financial cushion to start that ball rolling! (The "COMMITTEE" can not be expected to bankroll the reservations, etc.) So, if, indeed, you are looking forward to more NEWS, and (PLEASE!) to the REUNION. . . try to send a few coins to Sox. . . Sheesh! I hate to ask, but it is necessary if we are to continue. Some of you have been great about contributing, and always ask if we need more. . . now's the time, folks. Let one of us know how you feel about this. OK?

SOX AND GRACE spent 3 days in Seattle, and then took a cruise between Vancouver Island and British Columbia mainland, with stops in Victoria, Campbell River, and Vancouver. . . They returned to Albuquerque the eve of September 10!!

DO YOU KNOW THESE YOUNG MEN WHO SEEM TO BE PLAYING "Huckelberry Finn"??

(Modesty preserved by Webmaster)

HARK!
This page is being written on Sunday, October 7, 2001. . . What in the world can anyone say that even sounds important or has any relevance at all?? Here on the Bayfront we are glued to CNN and sometimes FOX, and there are no answers. . . where ever you are glued. In my little Zen book it says: "Fundamentally, the marksman aims at himself." I only fear that it is true.

"But the Emperor has nothing on at all!" cried a little child.     Hans Christian Andersen

HERE'S A LITTLE SOMETHING WE DID IN OCTOBER 1943!!

Deja vu?

ALICE HOYE ROISE says SHE is ready for the next REUNION and hopes it will be in Glen Ellyn (yes indeed-y, Alice, it WILL) and was pulling for October 2002. . . but of course, it will be:
SEPTEMBER 22, 2002. . . probably a Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday morning, like the 50th! Less than a year away, now, so take your vitamins, do your dreaded exercises, and get into PARTY MODE! We had dances during WWII, and we are having a BIG party during this foray. As Alice said in her letter:
YA'LL COME! Watch for more detailed news, and PLEASE block out that weekend for

THE LAST HURRAH!

LUCILLE HILL TROSS sent us these pictures of herself and the delightful view from her deck in Blue Eye, MO: Table Rock Lake! Thanks, Lucille!   We're contemplating having a "Who has the best view?" Contest!

Do YOU have a view we should share???

VERY LATE NEWS
Just as the print version of the Newsletter was being published we received news of the death of our wonderful Classmate and EVER LOYAL Friend
CLARENCE STANLEY HOWELL, JR.
"SOX"
on Thursday, 18 October 2001, of an apparent heart attack.

Sox has been an avid supporter of efforts to keep the Class together, and has encouraged this editor in numerous ways . . . including trying to improve my golf game at the Laughlin reunion!

Ring a bell for our newest Angel!
