A message from the Editor:

Here we go again..another issue hits the press. There is a lot to report, and a lot to be thankful for! Mostly, all the generous donations that have been sent to us from happy readers..and GOOD comments about our efforts!

The 50TH REUNION COMMITTEE, including Louise Mathison Rooney, Russ Koester, Gunther Wittmuss and others voted us a likely cause to receive the "left-overs" from that reunion, and sent us a lovely Christmas check for over $1000.00. Now, our treasurer, Sox Howell, has some moola in the checking account, and can pay the Printer, and the Post Master, and we can keep going! (don't groan!) Also, Bob Hilb sent a nice check to enhance the Laughlin Valentine, and Dick DeWitt, Eunice Fiala Pahlas, LeRoy Roath, Roger Rose, Nancy MacGonagle More, Don Sage, Marilyn Savage, Jeanne Bassett Jones, Jennie Swallen Groenig and Alice Hoye Roise sent contributions. THANK YOU, one and all. There is a run-down of expenses later in this Letter.

Laughlin Reunion 2000

Next, we have the GRAND REUNION in Laughlin, Nevada!! WOW, what a blast! It would be hard to relate what we all did for 3 days and nights...but the best was the Valentine Party for just our class on the 14th. There were 24 grads, and 16 "spice",etc.. (making us the winners for the most attending the entire reunion..if there was a trophy, we'd have it on the mantle..but there wasn't.)

Following are pals who came: Ludella Pittman Ebinger; Nancy Fredericksen North; John Glathe; Vera Hinrichs Allen; Don Jameson; Sox Howell; Marge Holtorf Cosgrove; Ruth Hookham McCann; Daryl James; Tom Jensen; Russ Koester; Jim and Frannie Proctor Love (just WAIT for that news!); Nancy MacGonagle More; Beatty Schellenberg Pfeuffer; Al Osterling; Roger Rose; Virginia Scholl Buck; Jennie Swallen Groenig; Anne Wallerius Hoy; Phil Woodworth; Chuck Staufenberg, and me, the Editor...and 16 mates..40 in all! For a picture of the group click here !   WHERE WERE YOU???

We played a little golf (some of us), pulled a few slots (some of us), took naps in the afternoons (some of us), and ALL of us had FUN. The bestest part was visiting with classmates, meeting wives and husbands and sisters, taking volumes of snapshots, and just being glad we could make it at all!

IF YOU DIDN'T COME, WE MISSED YOU! And you missed some wonderful NEWS...keep reading, you'll find it coming up!

NEWS OF GRADS:

You may have heard that our good friend and original Reunion inspirer, Gunther Wittmuss, has hit upon hard times, having endured a stroke in recent months. He is said to be doing well, and is improving every day in a Rehab Center in Wheaton. His son David is taking all messages to him. David's address is 157 North Ott Ave., GE 60137. Send him a "howdy"! We're pulling for you, Gunny!

Jeanne Bassett Jones, Who lives just up the coast from me in Palos Verdes, sent a report that her brother Gerald ('39) recently sold the last piece of "land grant" land that her family owned on Swift road, where he ran the Fairview Poultry Farm for years. Town homes will replace the farm land..such is "progress", Jeanne! Makes you wonder what will be left in another 20! Wish you had come to Nevada!

[Ed.Note: There is a wonderful new book out titled: GLEN ELLYN - A Village Remembered, by Helen Ward and Robt. Chambers. More about the Churchills, Wimpress', and Bassetts, plus history of everyone you ever heard of can be found in that tome.]

Nancy Jane Fredericksen North did come to Laughlin, and filled out one of my questionaires (she's the only one, so far!). Nancy lost her husband last June, and is looking for news of old friends and trying to have some fun in spite of her loss. She would like us to have MORE get togethers. Me too, Nancy.

The Rev. Roger Rose and The Rev. Shirley Rose both came to our parties in Laughlin, and we hadn't connected with Rog for years, although, he, too, is here in California, living in Whittier. It seemed they both had a good time, and won the raffle for an afghan at the Wednesday night dinner. Having two Episcopal priests with us must have helped with the Blessings we all enjoyed during the days together! Good to see you, Rog, and your lovely bride (they were having a wedding Anniversary, I heard).

Anne Wallerius Hoy and husband Dave, were on their way to see some kids in Maine after the Nevada sojourn. ANNE looks abslutely like ANNE, and you would recognize her even if you met in the supermarket!! DAVE is our web server guy, and knows all about what happens with computers and web sites. You may remember that he was acknowledged in the first issue..MORE THANKS, DAVE!

We have heard from Gene Maxwell Wiesbrock that she sees Eunice Fiala Pahlas now and then, but neither have computers, so they either visit in person or "Log On" to the US Post Office.

Ken Klug reports in to our co-hort Phil Woodworth with news for which we are very thankful..Ken is the one who informed us about Gunther's trouble..he has fun playing football with his grands, and feels better for it..GO, Ken!

Betty Staley Carlin says that they have moved around some from Illinois to Nebraska, and finally to Minnesota, and are enjoying retirement there (even in the winter??) She sees Carol Wiegand Williams for lunch sometimes..even tho' Carol lives in Iowa! Thanks for the update Betty. (It was a typo about not including a MN gradlast issue..Sorry!)

Bill Herstock (probably in Florida, now) has a home in New Hampshire, but spends the winters either in Arizona or Florida..he says "the past is really interesting, but NOW really matters"! How true, Bill! He also appreciates Balboa Island, having visited here when he lived in Los Angeles! Me too,Bill...We call it the HUB of the Universe!

Chuck Staufenberg, whom you all know and love as our WEBMASTER has a story of his own to tell..on and off the web! He is part of Micro Pulse Systems, Inc. with Judy Hubbell, widow of his partner Bob who died in 1992. He says they are not rich and famous, but eating regularly! (We are grateful for that, as without Chuck, there would be NO Glenbard Website for our Class). Some of you know Chuck was once married to classmate Bette Stitt (now known as Kalina DeMontmorency) and has two swell boys: Kurt, who manages a computer software project for HP, and Bruce, a musician, who lives close. Our "Webber" goes each spring (since 1981) to Scotland, and hikes, with camera in hand, taking panoramas for his own website, that you can see here. Well worth logging on!! Lovely!
[ As your editor, I need also to say that without this guy's input and guidance, and gentle prodding, I'd NEVER be able to write this Newsletter! Thank you, my friend.]

We all remember this gentleman from math, sports, and just plain kindness, to whom we did a great injustice by mistakenly reporting him as "gone" in the last issue.."Kietz" is still very much with us in a facility close to his daughter in Willmette! He is 99 years old, loved by his care-takers and all who know him..as RENO! Send Kietz a note c/o Sally Mumley, 510 Washington Ave., Willmette, IL 60091. Kietz

Dr. John Glathe, who promised me a LONG story on Bat habitats (!!) wrote instead about how much fun it was to visit with everyone in Laughlin, and his plans to travel to Paris, Spain and Portugal in May. Last year he did become a docent at Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve at Stanford, identifying and documenting bat habitats on the Preserve..you might remember he's also an "eclipse" chaser, and says the next one will be in Africa..right, Johnnie? (Good place for the next get-together?) NAH!

Jim Martyn, one of our "angels" has a sister Phylis and a sister Nancy. Phylis, '39, writes the Newsletter for that class, and has given me some good tips about doing this job. Nancy Martyn was in Laughlin, but Phyl couldn't make it. We have corrected the spelling of MARTYN on our "angel" list.

RoseMarie Marek Vaughn finds herself living back in Los Angeles after a time in Costa Mesa. She has just in the past few days become an e-mail user, and is now accessible to all of us at the drop of a "sign-on"! Her best company are her two Kitties, who think they own the computer, and may answer your notes before she has a chance! Her address is: zoops@mediaone.net Send her a Hi!

Charlie Rosenthal, planner of reunions, wrote a speech to give to us at dinner on Wednesday night..I don't have room to print it all, Charlie, like I promised, but here are his 3 points:
We are lucky to have come from Glen Ellyn and Lombard and Wheaton; we are lucky to have E-mail; and he felt lucky, as did we all, to have graduated from GLENBARD..where comradery is still holding us together! THANKS, Charlie!

Daryl James, who lives in Mountain Center, CA..high on the mountain above Palm Springs, is doing some free-lance writing for Palm Springs Life magazine..he is GOOD, and has shared some work with me about one of our "angels". Read it here. It is revealing, and tender, and very informative about our only classmate who died in that battle that we thought would be an end to war in our time. I have edited it somewhat. Forgive me for that, Daryl, my friend. Just keep up the essay-ing, and keep us informed !!

AND, one more for the road...
We received some anecdotes from Tom Jensen after much prodding. You may remember he travels the world in and out of business (funny?) Anyway, Tom runs each and every morning no matter where he is. He tells about "One morning in Saudi Arabia while running with my eyes down, I ran right into the back end of a camel(!) grazing by the side of the road. I don't know which one of us was more surprised!" (I bet I do, Tom!)

Editor's note: (another one)
Last issue, I made a smart-aleck remark about "encryption" as referred to by our Robert Durnal, (who takes it very seriously). As it turns out, it was a topic of discussion among the candidates for President. Mr. Bradley said: "I think that trying to set a standard for encryption (on the internet) is very important...could prevent the growth of the Internet if people thought their privacy could be invaded...".
Here is Bob's explanation:
"Encryption is the science or art of making information cryptic, or unreadable to the observer who does not have the proper key. Modern encryption takes a block of characters and considers it as a number. That number is changed by the encryption algorithim to form another number that cannot be reversed back to the original number without knowledge of a third number, the key, used in the encryption process."
Thanks, Bob. Makes more sense, even to me, and that's not easy.

"ANGELS": Not our favorite item, but we have two new Angels to report: Bill Gregory and Jean Irwin. Neither of these was a full four year grad as far as I know, but '44's all the same. RING A BELL FOR THESE OUR PALS!

On the other hand, we have FOUND: Lucille Beyerman Beckman, and she is added to our roster, living in Santa Barbara, CA.
Also: Frances Buchholz Gauspohl has been found in Port St. Lucie, FL, and added to the roster. We had made an "angel" of her, but it was her husband who passed away. We are happy to have you back, Fran.

While we are speaking about "lost and found" grads, please remember to check the roster and the home page once in a while for news of friends and changes of status.
